Windows Live Messenger has stopped working

At some point in the last week Live Messenger just started to give me the
fairly useless "WIndows Live Messenger has stopped working". There’s been
some WU and I’ve installed a couple of apps (including the MS webcam
drivers/app) but I wasn’t paying attention enough to know if it was anything
in particular enough to break messenger (and everything else seems to work).

I’ve reinstalled/repaired with no change. I’ve run as admin, I’ve run as
Vista SP2 compat.
