The gaming behemoth that is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was only the third most played game on Xbox Live last year despite its mammoth launch and record-breaking credentials.
The title of Xbox Live’s most played of 2009 went to Halo 3 which received the most unique users on the console’s online platform despite being two years old. Coming in second and beating its replacement was Call of Duty 4. The top five was rounded out by Call of Duty: World at War and Gears of War 2.

Much of Modern Warfare 2’s surprising omission from the top spot can be accounted for by its more recent release having only hit the shelves in November. Although being beaten to glory by Halo 3, the Call of Duty series showed its vicelike grip on the gaming market, landing the following three positions and a staggering amount of overall game play time.
Halo, a somewhat surprise victor, is of course an integral element to the Xbox brand, one which clearly remains massively popular judging by the 1million plus users who used the Live feature in a single day.
The figures, released by Xbox Live Programme Manager, Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb, revealed winners in a range of other categories, including Battlefield 1943 as the most downloaded Arcade title and GTA IV as the top played game on Windows Live.
